The Rice Toss

Ever wonder who came up with the idea of throwing rice at newlyweds?  Well it all started with the Egyptians and the Romans.  It was believed that grains like wheat and rice symbolized fertility and prosperity.  The throwing of rice was used to feed uninvited spirits who attended the ceremony.  The thought behind this was that it would ward off evil spirits because well fed spirits would not bring harm to the couple….that sounds about right. I know I am far more reasonable when well fed, just ask my husband!

We in America seem to have gotten lucky when it comes to the celebratory rice toss.  At least we only have to deal with rice.  In other cultures they throw other, slightly more messy, foods.  For example, in Morocco it is common to throw figs, dates, and raisins to encourage a “fruitful” union.   In some other European countries, eggs are thrown at the couple couple to represent new life.  EGGS!?  Can you imagine what that does to a pristine white dress?  Great for your hair, not so awesome for that Vera Wang.

Today, the rice toss symbolizes prosperity and abundance.  There was an urban legend floating around for a while that when birds ate the uncooked, discarded rice, it would expand in their stomachs and they would explode.   This myth has been completely debunked!  Regardless of that, people have started to throw other things at the newlyweds.  Personally, I think this is a great idea because rice stings!

Fun Fact: Now there is a company that makes Designer Wedding Rice.  It is heart shaped, environmentally safe rice.  It is easy to clean up and won’t roll when stepped on-safety first!

Another alternative is bubbles.  They are a non toxic solution, they won’t stain any dresses or tuxes, and they can be decorated.  Look at this great find, champagne bottles of bubbles that double as place card holders! (They also make great favors, to find them for purchase click here.)

Another popular item to toss is confetti.  Confetti is great because you can get it in any color!  It can match your theme or color scheme though it does have the tendency to get a little messy!

This past winter at Saratoga National Golf Club, we had bride who made her own pom-pom confetti.  Remember this?
