Wedding Trends 2013!

Can you believe it? A new year already!?  2013 is going to be a fabulous year for weddings, just check out these great trends that you can expect to see all year long!

Food Truck Frenzy!

The food truck craze at events started in 2012 and it will certainly continue for the next few years!  With the food truck popularity in metropolitan areas and shows like “The Great Food Truck Race” on Food Network, more and more people are thinking about it.  Couples are looking for something different, a break from the tradition of a sit down dinner or a standard cocktail hour.  This is where food trucks come in.  They are a great way to add whimsy and something different and interactive for your guests to enjoy.  Food Trucks can be any type of food and add are a great wow factor, particularly as a late night nosh or as your guests are leaving the reception. Extended Receptions

For many people, the five hour reception is no longer enough time.  A big trend in 2012 was the after party- a whole new location, new food theme, a less formal attire, etc.  But, the wedding industry is starting to see wedding receptions lasting six, sometimes seven hours as opposed to an after party.   A big reason for the longer receptions?  Couples want to spend time with their guests, enjoy their meals at a leisurely pace, and dance the night away without ever leaving or changing venues. These extended receptions also make a great way to incorporate new types of foods.  While a couple may not deem a food truck as the same vision they have for their wedding in the cocktail hour or dinner portion of the event, it may be appropriate and even amazing as a late night option for their guests!  This is definitely a trend that is being utilized by younger couples, after the dinner portion of their reception, the older guests, grandma and grandpa can head home and the party can continue into the evening!

Technology & Social Media

With everyone being so social media crazed lately and smartphones bringing the internet to people’s fingertips, the internet is the way that most couples shop for their wedding now.  With that being said, there have been so many apps and websites that aide couples as they plan their nuptials.  Above all else, Pinterest reigns supreme as the social media of choice for brides and grooms.  From DIY crafts to tablescape inspiration to wedding dresses, couples are planning their entire weddings on pinterest.  Ong gone are the days when brides would sift through bridal magazines and cut out pages to create a thick binder of inspiration, now it is cataloged in one place digitally on pinterest.   Pinterest itself estimates there are tens of thousands of boards on its site dedicated solely to weddings.  With the pinterest app for iphone, droid, and ipad- you can pin from pinterest at anytime of the day or night!

Instagram is making a play as the social media of the future for weddings because couples can create their own hashtags that their guests can then instagram photos including the custom hashtag which will in turn create a gallery of images from that event.

Prints

Stripes and chevron stripes in particular has been a big trend in fashion and décor and it will certainly continue in the coming year.  Whether it’s napkins, stationary, table numbers, straws, or even cake-chevron is here to stay!  Rebecca Ashby of the Pink Orange says “Chevron is a classic pattern, much like herringbone, dots or stripes. It has been, and continues to be a big trend in wedding stationery, décor and details! Whether a single color or a combination of colors, it can give a real classic feel or can be modernized easily. I have designed weddings that are based fully on this pattern giving a real chic look, or just touches of the pattern for pops of color!”  Check out the new collection of chevron and more “Celebrations” at The Pink Orange.  And these photos of the collection by Tiffany Wayne Photography.

The Roaring Twenties

With the remake of The Great Gatsby set to hit theatres and a resurgence of all things Vintage, the twenties will make a big comeback as a wedding theme this year. The 1920s were a decade of extravagance and wild parties- what better for a wedding?  Champagne is a must for a 1920s themed wedding- whether that’s individual bottles for guests to be greeted with or fun and bubbly champagne cocktails, champagne is definitely a drink trend for 2013. Couples will begin to search for architecturally interesting spaces for their wedding venue as well as non-traditional spaces for their wedding venues.  Make way for the glitz and glamor of the twenties with lots of bling.  Incorporate a “speakeasy” bar in the reception or in a lounge area for guests.  Art Deco is a huge part of the 1920s- think geometric shapes and intricate patterns.   This style would be beautiful incorporated into an invitation, a save the date, even placecards.  What else are the 1920s known for?  Fashion!  Birdcage veils, headpieces and of course-feathers.   Muted colors such as pale pinks and beiges are one way to bring a vintage feel and of course a lot of metallics.  Think of bringing this into your wedding in linens, china, and chargers.   Want to make a big statement in the way of 1920s grandeur?  Incorporate tall centerpieces in a gold or silver vessel with lots of feathers or lush, pale flowers like peonies and roses.

Masquerades

A sub-trend coming out of the 1920s is masquerade themed weddings!  These events are highly dramatic and definitely make a statement.  Think of architecturally stunning/vintage feeling buildings with a black tie dress code.  These masks are beautiful and this type of event lends itself to many candles, metallics, and an overall vintage feel which is still popular for the coming year.

Brooch Bouquets

Brooches make a great addition to a bouquet.  Brides are opting out of as many all flower bouquets and adding brooches that have sentimental value to them or going entirely brooch and no flowers.  These bouquets are beautiful, but heavy! Consider keeping some flowers to make it easier to carry on the big day.  Entirely brooch bouquets need about fifty brooches to create- consider asking all the ladies attending your shower to bring along a brooch so you can carry them all with you on your big day.  You’re also creating a keepsake that you can pass on to future generations- just be sure not to toss this one! Check out more about brooch bouquets here.

Microbrews and Craft Beers

As the entire wedding industry makes a shift towards locally sourced products, alcohol will be no different!  Particularly as people are starting to drink more and more craft beers in general- they want to have them at their weddings.  A lot of times it may be a popular brew from their college town, or a brew they had when they were on vacation, or just something that the really enjoy.  Popular craft beers locally include Ommegang,  Davidson Brothers, and Lake Placid Brewery.
