Traditions: Unity Candle Alternatives

Lots of times couples ask what they can do instead of a unity candle.   Many like the sentiment of the unity candle, a symbol that they are coming together as one, but don’t necessarily want to do a candle, they may want to make it more personal.   For some alternative ideas check out these past posts regarding sand ceremonies, wine box ceremonies, and handfasting but here are a few more ideas as well!

Paint-

Love this idea! What a great canvas, either in your wedding colors, or your favorite colors.   This is great because by combining the paints together on the canvas you are creating a show piece that can be hung in your house for years after.   This is particularly great for couples who have children, the child or multiplie kids can have their own color (maybe a smaller amount) and not only be a part of the ceremony but also a part of the artwork which will stay a reminder forever.

A Cord of Three Strings-

This has a similar idea, but is a little more focused on religion.  Scripture says “a cord of three strings is not easily broken”, by braiding a cord of three strings it symbolizes the couple and their higher power and their belief in keeping that a large part of their marriage.

Fisherman’s Knot-

We had a couple at the Mansion at Cedar Hill who incorporated this into their ceremony recently as well.  The idea being a fisherman’s knot is that it is the strongest knot that you can tie, the rope will break before the knot becomes undone.  This is a beautiful symbolism to start married life off with as well.
